Decoding Your Preferences: A Deep Dive into My YouTube Community Survey Results

Writer's picture: Bryan DowningBryan Downing

I recently posed a simple yet crucial question to my YouTube community: "How do you prefer to receive updates and announcements from me?" The results are in, and they offer some fascinating insights into how we can best stay connected. A resounding 50% of respondents chose email, while another 50% opted for SMS/text messages. Interestingly, methods like messaging apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram) and private messaging platforms (Signal, Telegram) received zero votes. Let's unpack these results and discuss what they mean for the future of our communication.

The equal split between email and SMS reveals a community that values both accessibility and directness. Email, while sometimes perceived as less immediate, offers a platform for more detailed announcements, newsletters, and community updates. It allows for a more formal tone and provides a space to share links, images, and other rich content that might be cumbersome in a text message. Think of it as the place for in-depth discussions, longer-form content, and archived information. It's a reliable and established method, perfect for those who prefer to consume information at their own pace.

On the other hand, the equal preference for SMS/text messaging speaks volumes about the desire for immediacy and quick updates. Text messages are concise, delivered directly to your phone, and perfect for time-sensitive announcements, reminders about upcoming live streams, or quick polls. In a world saturated with information, a text message cuts through the noise and ensures that you receive crucial updates promptly. It's the ideal tool for grabbing attention and fostering a sense of immediacy and connection.

The complete absence of votes for messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, as well as private messaging platforms like Signal and Telegram, is perhaps the most surprising result. While these platforms are incredibly popular for personal communication, their lack of preference in this survey suggests a few possibilities. Firstly, it could indicate a desire to keep professional or community-related communications separate from personal messaging. Many people might prefer the clear boundaries offered by email and SMS, keeping their inboxes and text message threads distinct from their personal chats.

Secondly, it might reflect concerns about information overload. Messaging apps are often buzzing with activity, and the constant stream of notifications can be overwhelming. For community updates, people might prefer the more controlled environment of email or the direct, yet concise, nature of SMS, which allows them to manage the flow of information more effectively. They can choose when to engage with these channels, rather than being constantly bombarded with messages.

Thirdly, the lack of interest in private messaging platforms like Signal and Telegram might be attributed to their relatively smaller user base compared to email and SMS. While these platforms offer enhanced privacy and security, they haven't yet achieved the same level of widespread adoption. Therefore, relying on them for community communication would likely exclude a significant portion of my audience.

So, what are the key takeaways from this survey, and how will I use this information to improve communication with my community? The equal preference for email and SMS tells me that a dual approach is essential. I will continue to utilize both channels to ensure that everyone receives the information they need in their preferred format.

Email will be the hub for more detailed updates, longer articles, newsletters, and archived content. It will be the place to go for in-depth discussions and comprehensive information. I envision using email for monthly newsletters summarizing key events, sharing links to new videos and blog posts, and announcing any major changes or initiatives.

SMS/text messaging will be the go-to channel for quick announcements, reminders, and time-sensitive updates. Think of it as the "breaking news" alert system for my community. I'll use SMS to notify you about upcoming live streams, remind you about important deadlines, share quick polls, and announce any last-minute changes to schedules.

Moving forward, I will strive to use each channel strategically, maximizing their respective strengths. I'll also be mindful of not overloading either channel with unnecessary information. The goal is to keep you informed without overwhelming you.

While the survey results clearly indicate a preference for email and SMS, I’m always open to feedback and suggestions. Communication is a two-way street, and I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts on how we can improve our connection. Perhaps in the future, as different platforms evolve and grow, we can revisit this topic and explore new ways to stay connected. For now, however, email and SMS will remain the primary channels for communication, ensuring that everyone in my community stays informed and engaged. Thank you for participating in the survey, and I look forward to continuing this conversation with you!
