A larger delta T between the hot server exhaust air and the chilled water in the CRAH coils means more efficient heat rejection. This same principle applies inside the server itself; a larger delta T between the hot CPU and the cool air flowing over its heat sink results in better cooling. This is why a simplistic model of "energy in equals energy out" is flawed. If the cooling system can't maintain a sufficient delta T, it won't be able to remove heat fast enough, even if its theoretical total capacity is adequate. This can lead to hotspots where individual components overheat, or a gradual rise in the entire room's ambient temperature, degrading the performance of the entire system.
The Art of Airflow: Containing the Chaos
Maintaining a high delta T requires strict control over airflow. The single biggest threat to efficiency is the mixing of hot exhaust air with the cold intake air. If hot air recirculates back into the front of a server, the inlet temperature rises, reducing the delta T available for cooling the internal components and forcing the server's fans to work harder. To combat this, data centers employ a strategy known as "hot aisle/cold aisle" containment. Racks of servers are arranged in rows, all facing the same direction. The fronts of the servers face each other, creating a "cold aisle" where the CRAH units supply cold air. By ensuring the hot air has a short, direct path back to the cooling unit, you minimize the volume and velocity of air that needs to be moved, saving substantial energy. More advanced techniques take this even further. A "rear door heat exchanger" is a cooling coil bolted directly onto the back of a server rack, placing the radiator just inches from the server exhaust and capturing the heat before it ever enters the room. Other designs involve building physical containment structures with roofs over the hot aisle, which have melt-away panels that drop in the event of a fire to allow the sprinkler system to function.
When Systems Fail: Fire, Water, and Monitoring

While gaseous and foam systems exist, water remains a primary component of fire suppression. Power is delivered via modular whips that plug into distribution boxes under the floor, allowing desks to be connected at various points in the grid. This system automatically adjusts the color temperature of the lights throughout the day to match the body's natural cycle. In the morning, the light is warm and gentle (around 2700-3000K), becoming brighter and cooler (over 4000K) midday to promote alertness, and then fading back to a warmer tone at the end of the day.
An even more complex challenge is managing air quality, specifically the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2). On a densely populated trading floor, CO2 exhaled by people can build up to levels that have been shown to impair cognitive performance. With outside air at around 400 parts per million (ppm), indoor levels can easily climb to 1,200 ppm or higher; performance degradation can begin to occur above 1,500 ppm.
Jane Street's approach to this problem is multi-pronged. First, they constantly monitor CO2 levels throughout their spaces using a network of sensors. The primary solution is to dilute the indoor air by bringing in more fresh outside air.
